This stratovolcano is the highest point on the island. It dominates the surrounding area influencing the climate. The clouds come from the west and Agung takes their water so that the west is lush and green and the east dry and barren.

Gunung Agung last erupted in 1963-64 and is still active, with a large and very deep crater which occasionally belches smoke and ash. There is no path between the two routes at the top. Cecilie Scott provides an account of the ascent from Pura Pasar Agung. The mountain can be seen from various directions in video, there is a well produced video of the climb from Pura Pasar Agung and a short video from the top above Besakih. Greg Slayden describes a climb from Besakih claimed to have taken a remarkable four and a half hours to the peak and Ken Taylor describes a climb that took much longer and which included getting lost.

Guides are available in Besakih and the mountain can also be climbed without a guide. The climb from Besakih is quite tough. It is sometimes tackled as a single climb generally starting about 10.00pm for a dawn arrival at the peak and sometimes with an overnight camp about three quarters of the way up. It is far harder than the more popular Balinese climb up Gunung Batur. It is not a mountain that needs ropes and not quite high enough for altitude sickness but adverse weather conditions develop quickly and warm waterproof clothing is required and should be carried. There is no water available along the route.

Proceed through the temple complex then continue on a path that travels continuously upwards on a steep narrow spur through open forest and jungle most of the way. There is little potential to get lost until the route opens up towards the top where the correct route doubles backwards. Many climbers miss this turn and continue up a small valley which can be climbed out of with some difficulty. Expect to pay around Rp. 150,000 per person from main Bali centres such as Kuta or Ubud. The price will include the ferry and connecting shuttles. The popular Perama bus company and will charge only an additional Rp. 10,000 per surfboard.A far more convenient and rapid way of reaching Lombok is via local airlines. Many airlines make the 20 minute hop from Bali to Lombok (airport near Mataram). In general, a flight leaves Bali once every hour or two, from early morning until late afternoon. Any travel agency will make a flight reservation up to the day before departure. Tickets can be purchased at the airport, but you may not get the flight you want and you will likely pay a higher price. One-way fare can cost between Rp350,000 to Rp500,000 per person. The town of Ubud (north of Denpasar), with its art market, museums and galleries, is arguably the cultural centre of Bali.

Lahan sawah di Bali

Southern Bali in the foreground and Mount Agung behind

There are major coastal roads and those that cross the island mainly north-south. Due to the mountainous terrain in the island's center, the roads tend to follow the crests of the ridges across the mountains. There are no railway lines.

The island is surrounded by coral reefs. Beaches in the south tend to have white sand while those in the north and west have black sand. The Ho River is navigable by small sampan boats. Black sand beaches between Pasut and Klatingdukuh are being developed for tourism, but apart from the seaside temple of Tanah Lot.

To the east, the Lombok Strait separates Bali from Lombok and marks the biogeographical division between the fauna of the Indomalayan ecozone and the distinctly different fauna of Australasia. If
you're lucky you might see black monkeys, macaques, squirrels,
iguanas, green snakes (some venomous), leaf monkeys, sambar,
wild pigs, mouse, pythons and buffaloes in primary forest.

In the marine park you can find mangroves with several fish
species and coral reefs in front of the peninsula Prapat Agung
and the island Menjangan. Moreover there's a bird reserve on the
islands in the bay of Gilimanuk.

It is forbidden to fish or to take away coral near the park's
coastline.

The goal of the National Park is the sustainable use of the
park. The National Park keeps a close eye on the farmers from
the surrounding villages who would like to log one of the many
trees in the park.

Other areas around the park such as coconut and eucalyptus
plantations were enclosed in the new boundaries of the park in
1984 and these are new developed to become primary forest again.

The long term approach of the park is eco-tourism with emphasis
on individual travellers instead of bus loads with tourists.
This will increase your change of seeing real wildlife instead
of making it a walk in the park.

The park's headquarters are located in Cekik, near Gilimanuk.
Here but also in Labuhan Lalang you can get permits for the
park. When you pick up your permits the park will also appoint
you a guide who will take you on your hikes through the park.

When you feel like sleeping over in the park you have to bring
your own sleeping bag, mosquito net, water and food. Don't
forget to bring some good hiking shoes and water-proof jackets.
Cooking is in the open air on a camp fire.

There are simple cottages around the park where you can spend
the night.

Hiking in the national park is really something for nature
lovers and for those who love to dive or snorkel Menjangan
island is the place to be. In Labuhan Lalang you can find one of
the park's post from where you can rent boats to deer island.

The island of Menjangan is home to the Javanese deer but also
the white Balinese starling. It is said that only a hundred
white Balinese starling still exist in the wild. The rangers do
not encourage you to take hikes throughout the park since there
are many species of venomous snakes.

When you feel like diving around the island bring your own gear
and oxygen bottles. There are several dive operators in Sanur,
Kuta, Lovina and Amed that organize diving trips to this
beautiful island and its amazing underwater world.

About the author:
Matt Verbaan loves to give you practical travel insights and his
experiences of travelling to every corner of the beautiful
island Bali. All his travel stories and tips are found on his
website http://www.bali-travel-life.c

Tourist Information on Asia

Author: Clinton Maxwell

Article:
If you are searching for a good tourist destination to travel to
this summer then one place you are likely to have overlooked is
Asia. Taking up a quarter of the Earth, Asia is a beautiful and
exotic location which has something to suit everyone, no matter
what their tastes.

The Best Asian Places to Visit

There are a number of places in Asia which seem to be more
popular than others. So when you are planning your Asian journey
some of the best locations to visit include:

• Vietnam • Indonesia • Thailand • Malaysia •
Philippines

Vietnam has two main hotspots that are not to be missed and they
include Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. They are both modernized and
they provide everything you could possibly need to have a great
vacation. However you will need to have a tourist visa before
you can actually get into Vietnam and the mosquitoes there can
be particularly annoying so it is always best to carry some
repellent around with you.

Thailand is another extremely popular Asian place which
thousands of tourists flock to each year. What you may not know
about the people in Thailand is that they are actually quite
religious. They believe that the head is the highest part of the
body and so you should never touch anybody’s head whilst you
are there. You should also not make fun of the king whose
pictures are situated around Thailand and also never point at
anything with your foot. If you remember these small things then
you should enjoy your stay.

Malaysia is all about culture and you will see various food
stands situated around the place selling local delicacies. It is
definitely advised that you taste these delicacies when you can.
Another tip when you are travelling to Malaysia is to wear
really cool clothing. The people of Malaysia are religious and
you will notice that there are a number of different religious
buildings situated around the place.

Finally Indonesia is a fascinating place to visit, though there
are some very important rules you need to remember. Anything
with Chinese writing on is banned in Bali.
